چکیده

The present work attempts to integrate the independent efforts in the fast N-body community to create the fastest N-body library for many-core and heterogenous architectures. Focus is placed on low accuracy optimizations, in response to the recent interest to use FMM as a preconditioner for sparse linear solvers. A direct comparison with other state-of-the-art fast N -body codes demonstrates that orders of magnitude increase in performance can be achieved by careful selection of the optimal algorithm and low-level optimization of the code. The current N-body solver uses a fast multipole method with an efficient strategy for finding the list of cell-cell interactions by a dual tree traversal. A task-based threading model is used to maximize thread-level parallelism and intra-node load-balancing. In order to extract the full potential of the SIMD units on the latest CPUs, the inner kernels are optimized using AVX instructions.

Parallel Dual Tree Traversal on Multi-core and Many-core Architectures for Astrophysical N-body Simulations

In astrophysical N -body simulations, Dehnen’s algorithm, implemented in the serial falcON code and based on a dual tree traversal, is faster than serial Barnes-Hut tree-codes, but outperformed by parallel CPU and GPU tree-codes. In this paper, we present a parallel dual tree traversal, implemented in the pfalcON code, targeting multi-core CPUs and manycore architectures (Xeon Phi). We focus he...

Extreme Scale FMM-Accelerated Boundary Integral Equation Solver for Wave Scattering

Abstract. Algorithmic and architecture-oriented optimizations are essential for achieving performance worthy of anticipated energy-austere exascale systems. In this paper, we present an extreme scale FMM-accelerated boundary integral equation solver for wave scattering, which uses FMM as a matrix-vector multiplication inside the GMRES iterative method. Our FMM Helmholtz kernels are capable of t...

Shell: A Spatial Decomposition Data Structure for 3D Curve Traversal on Many-Core Architectures

Shared memory many-core processors such as GPUs have been extensively used in accelerating computation-intensive algorithms and applications. When porting existing algorithms from sequential or other parallel architecture models to shared memory many-core architectures, non-trivial modifications are often needed in order to match the execution patterns of the target algorithms with the characte...

An improved algorithm to reconstruct a binary tree from its inorder and postorder traversals

It is well-known that, given inorder traversal along with one of the preorder or postorder traversals of a binary tree, the tree can be determined uniquely. Several algorithms have been proposed to reconstruct a binary tree from its inorder and preorder traversals. There is one study to reconstruct a binary tree from its inorder and postorder traversals, and this algorithm takes running time of...

Fork-Join and Data-Driven Execution Models on Multi-core Architectures: Case Study of the FMM

Extracting maximum performance of multi-core architectures is a difficult task primarily due to bandwidth limitations of the memory subsystem and its complex hierarchy. In this work, we study the implications of fork-join and data-driven execution models on this type of architecture at the level of task parallelism. For this purpose, we use a highly optimized fork-join based implementation of t...
